Foster care

Fostering is a necessary step toward a normal life for many shelter animals. Foster families are a great asset to our facility and help to save many lives. When we are full of animals we must turn away many adoptable potential pets. These animals are usually sent to kill shelters, thrown out on a back road, or passed from family to family. By applying to foster you open up space to save a life. Fostering is not always easy. Animals that go into foster care often need special care. They may be very young or very old, or they may be sick or scared, but one thing is always the same. They always need love, attention, and patience to become better. Who needs to be fostered?

Infants

Very young puppies or kittens that have been taken away from their mother too early often find their way to our door. These animals need around the clock care we cannot provide at our shelter. Some of these must be bottled fed as often as every two hours!

Young Animals

Puppies and kittens that are under the ages of 3-4 months are not put onto the adoption floor because they are too young to be spayed or neutered. These animals greatly benefit from the training and socialization given in a foster home.

Sick/ Injured/ Recovering

Animals that come to us in bad condition require extra care before they can be adopted. This means they have to stay in the quarantine area longer. However, we are always glad when we can get these animals into loving homes. When in foster care, they always heal faster.

Terminal or Aging

It is sad that some animals have an extremely low chance to be adopted from our shelter. This is, of course, no fault of their own. The best thing anyone can do for them is offer them a comforting place. Fostering offers relief from the stressful shelter life.

Special Needs

Some animals come to us with special emotional needs. These animals benefit from a foster family that is very patient and understanding.

What is required of foster parents?

We ask that all of our foster parents have their current animals up to date on all required vaccinations. This is for the protection of their animals as well as the fostered pets. Also, if a foster rents their home we will need to contact the landlord. We ask that the foster parents bring the animals to our shelter when their vaccines are due. They will also work on house-training and socializing the fostered animals. Above all we ask that all of our foster parents understand that no matter how hard they try, not all animals will survive their time in foster care due to illness or age.
